Jenis- Jenis Kalimat Berdasarkan Strukturnya

Dalam penulisan kalimat, ada beberapa susunan atau struktur yang perlu kita pahami agar penulisan kalimat yang ditulis menjadi baik.

Sentence Structure

Menjadi baik artinya  kalimat tersebut lengkap dan dapat dimengerti oleh pembaca. Apa itu kalimat lengkap? kalimat lengkap adalah kalimat yang memiliki satu subjek dan satu kata kerja dan diikuti oleh objek. Seperti:

        The doctor checks the patient.

Pada contoh kalimat di atas terdapat satu subjek (Doctor) dan satu kata kerja (checks). Kemudian diikuti oleh objeknya (the patients).

Maka dari itu pada tulisan ini kita akan membahas jenis-jenis struktur kalimat. Di dalam Bahasa Inggris jenis-jenis struktur kalimat disebut dengan sentence structure. Sentence structure terdiri dari; Simple sentence, Compound sentence, Complex sentence dan compound complex sentence. Mari kita lihat definisi dari Simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence dan compound complex sentence. Selain itu kita lihat juga contoh-contoh kalimat Simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence dan compound complex sentence.

Simple Sentence.

Simple Sentence adalah struktur kalimat sederhana dan struktur kalimat yang paling dasar. 

Yaitu kalimat yang hanya memiliki satu klausa (independent clause). Kalimat lengkap memiliki satu subjek dan satu kata kerja (verb).

Contoh kalimat simple sentence

    1. My father builds a castle on the hill. 

    2. We find a wallet.

    3. They go home late.

Jika diperhatikan ketiga kalimat di atas, maka kalimat-kalimat tersebut memiliki makna yang jelas yang dapat dipahami oleh pembaca.

Selain itu, kalimat tersebut juga memiliki satu subjek, seperti My father, we, they. Dan memiliki satu kata kerja, seperti; builds, find, go pada masing-masing kalimat.

Compound Sentence

Struktur kalimat ini dibentuk ketika dua atau lebih simple sentence (kalimat sederhana) digabungkan menjadi satu kalimat. Perhatikan kalimat berikut:

    Arga eats chicken.

    Arga drinks avocado juice.

Kedua kalimat di atas akan menjadi compound sentence dengan menambahkan Conjunction (konjungsi) yaitu dikenal dengan coordinating conjunction.

    Arga eats chicken and drinks avocado juice.

Contoh kalimat compound sentence:

1. Ardi cannot come to school, but he goes to market.

2. Lian is a new teacher, and she teaches very well.

3. It is raining, so I go to school by taxi.

4.   Do you want to drink tea or coffee?

Agar terbentuk compound sentence, maka kita tambahkan coordinating conjunction, seperti; For, and, nor, but, or, yet & so (FANBOYS).

Complex Sentence

Di dalam struktur kalimat ini, ada dua istilah klausa yang perlu dipahami terlebih dahulu.

 Yaitu:

    1. Independent Clause

    2. Dependent Clause

Independent clause adalah klausa yang bisa berdiri sendiri. Kalimat lengkap yang terdapat subjek utama dan kata kerja utama. Di dalam Bahasa Inggris disebut juga main clause.

Contohnya; We found a wallet. 

Kalimat ini dikatakan bisa berdiri sendiri karena sudah memiliki satu subjek dan satu kata kerja. 

Dependent Clause adalah klausa yang tidak bisa berdiri sendiri dan selalu ada subordinate conjunction seperti, when, while, before, where, dll. Dependent Clause harus ditemani atau diengkapi oleh independent clause agar menjadi kalimat yang sempurna dan masuk akal. 

Contohnya; When we go home.

Kalimat ini secara makna pasti sedikit menggantung dan seperti ada yang kurang. Maka dari itu untuk melengkapinya perlu ditambahkan independent clause, sehingga menjadi:

    We found a wallet when we went home.

Contoh kalimat Complex sentence:

 1. Jeremy comes to the class before his lecturer gets into the class.

 2. After you eat, wash the plate.

3. Ardi was drinking milk when his mother ironed his clothes.

4. Lucky was very diligent student when he was in senior high school.

5. Andrian cannot visit his grandmother next vacation because he will be finishing his final project.

6. My father does not go to work; he is not sick though. 

7. When I finish cooking, I will help you to finish your homework.

8. It is raining; therefore, I don't go anywhere.

9. Afnan spent his vacation in Lombok, He did not visit Mandalika Circuit though.

10. Many students are playing football in the football field even though it is raining.

Rumus Kalimat Complex Sentence:

Rumus kalimat Complex Sentence sangat mudah, jika kita memahami salah satu contoh kalimat di atas. Adalah sebagai berikut rumus kalimat complex sentence:

Dependent clause + independent clause

Independent clause + dependent clause 

Jika dipahami, susunan kalimat complex sentence bisa dibolak-balik. Lihat contoh di bawah:

Afnan was sleeping when his mother cooked in the kitchen.  

Independent                                     dependent

 When his mother cooked in the kitchen, Afnan was sleeping.

Dependent                                                      Independent 

Perbedaannya adalah, jika subordinating conjunction-nya di awal kalimat, maka perlu ditambahkan koma. Jika subordinating conjunction-nya di tengah kalimat, maka tidak ada koma.

Compound Complex Sentence

Compound-complex sentence adalah struktur kalimat yang pada kalimat tersebut terdiri dari lebih dari satu maupun lebih independnet clause dan dependent clause. Compound - complex sentence juga dikenal dengan Complex-compound sentence.

Contoh kalimat compound complex sentence:

1. Yesterday Jack came across a small gold and he brought it to gold shop to check its pureness, then the shop keeper said that it was a real gold. 

2.  She gave me one of those long, sharp stares again, and I could tell that she was once more pondering whether or not her favorite nephew wasn't completely submerged in grape juice up to his tonsils.
