What is compound noun?

Generally, noun is one of categories of words in parts of speech. The definition of noun is that words refer to identify any of class of people, places, or things (common noun), or any name of things (proper noun).

Moreover, noun can be made up of more than one word. We call this as compound noun.

In this post we would like to see how compound noun is composed. Compound noun is a word that is made with two or more words.

Three forms of compound noun

Compound noun can be written in the three forms below:

1. Open or space - space between word

For example: bus stop, swimming pool, living room, etc.

2. Hyphenated between word.

The compound noun is separated by hyphen. 

For example: six-pack, ink-well, cooking-oil, etc.   

3. Closed or Solid

In this written style, the compound noun is not separated or is given any space.

For example: whiteboard, blackboard, bedroom, breakfast, etc.
